Understand in one article! What exactly is a "solid-state battery"?

Time: December 10, 2025

Recently, China's first large-capacity all-solid-state battery production line has been completed and entered the small-batch testing and production stage.

So, what exactly is an all-solid-state battery? Why is it considered a key driver of the future development of the new energy vehicle industry? Today, let's take a closer look at the several rounds of upgrades all-solid-state batteries have undergone.

Common mobile phones, electric vehicles, and laptops in daily life primarily use liquid lithium batteries.

The two ends of the battery are the positive and negative electrodes, with a liquid electrolyte in the middle. The liquid electrolyte provides a transport channel for lithium ions, allowing them to move back and forth between the positive and negative electrodes for charging and discharging.

Unlike liquid batteries, solid-state batteries mainly consist of solid electrolytes, such as lithium-containing inorganic salts, polymers, or ceramics.

The content of liquid electrolyte in solid-state batteries: All-solid-state batteries completely replace liquid electrolytes with solid electrolytes, truly achieving "zero moisture." Besides significantly improving safety performance, this also increases battery capacity and charging efficiency.

Stronger, faster, safer: "Flammable and explosive" is a thing of the past. Compared to liquid batteries, the application of solid electrolytes has brought a huge performance improvement to all-solid-state batteries.

Solid-state batteries can achieve an energy density of 400-500 Wh/kg, more than twice the energy storage of liquid batteries.

Experiments have confirmed that the ionic conductivity of solid electrolytes is more than twice that of liquid electrolytes, significantly increasing the charging speed of solid-state batteries.

The use of solid electrolytes fundamentally solves the problems of electrolyte leakage and evaporation, greatly reducing safety hazards. Their heat resistance exceeding 300℃ significantly reduces the risk of fire.

With the completion of China's first large-capacity solid-state battery production line, my country has achieved a crucial leap from technological research and development to industrialization in this core field. Solid-state batteries have broad application prospects in new energy vehicles, low-altitude economy, and other fields.

In the field of new energy vehicles, the heat resistance of solid-state batteries exceeding 300℃ reduces the risk of spontaneous combustion in electric vehicles. Besides improving safety performance, the battery range is increased by 100 kg, potentially exceeding 1000 kilometers and even supporting 10-15 minute fast charging, bringing the charging speed of electric vehicles close to that of refueling.

The world's first eVTOL (unmanned aerial vehicle) solid-state battery flight test in the low-altitude economy field has been completed, confirming that the flight time of drones using solid-state batteries can be increased by 60% to 90%, making them more suitable for scenarios such as logistics and plant protection. From the laboratory to the industrial chain, from the ground to the sky, all-solid-state batteries are entering our lives.
